May 2026 Pension Payments: When They Arrive and What to Check on Your Pay Slip

The beginning of May 2026 holds a few surprises for Italian pensioners: the Festa dei Lavoratori (Workers' Day) on 1 May, which this year falls on a Friday, causes pension payments to be delayed beyond the usual first day of the month. This may appear to be a purely technical detail, yet in practice it can significantly affect the financial planning of those who depend on that monthly sum.

In this article we clarify the official payment dates and any potential advance credits, and explain why it is worthwhile to check your INPS pay slip (cedolino) even before the credit appears in your account.

Official Payment Dates: Poste Italiane and Banks Do Not Align

The first point to note is that Poste Italiane and banking institutions follow different schedules, a distinction that becomes even more significant when a public holiday falls at the beginning of the month.

  • Poste Italiane current account: official credit from Saturday, 2 May 2026. Post offices will be open during the morning hours only.
  • Bank current account: official credit from Monday, 4 May 2026, the first available banking day following the extended weekend.

This means that holders of traditional bank accounts will need to wait up to three additional days beyond the start of the month — a circumstance to bear in mind particularly for those with direct debits or recurring payments scheduled for the very first days of May.

Possible Early Credits: Who May Receive Their Pension Sooner

Alongside the official dates, there are certain circumstances in which the credit may arrive early, although this does not constitute a contractual guarantee.

  • Holders of an online BancoPosta account may see their pension credited as early as 1 May, thanks to Poste Italiane's automated internal systems, which operate independently of public holidays.
  • Some banks may advance the credit to 2 May, reducing the waiting period compared to the official date of 4 May.

It is important to emphasise that these are non-guaranteed eventualities: they depend on the policies of the individual institution and cannot be relied upon for financial planning purposes.

Cash Withdrawal Schedule at Post Office Counters

For pensioners who collect their pension in cash at post office counters, an alphabetical rota system based on surname is in place — as is customary whenever concentrated demand is anticipated at the beginning of the month. The schedule is as follows:

  • A – B: Saturday, 2 May (morning only)
  • C – D: Monday, 4 May
  • E – K: Tuesday, 5 May
