The landscape of consumer protection in Italy is being enriched with new regulatory tools, thanks to the transposition of important European directives and AGCM's proactive stance.
Right to repair: a turning point for consumers
With the European Delegation Law 2025, definitively approved by the Italian Senate on 11 March 2026, the right to have household appliances and electronic devices repaired becomes a legally protected right. The delegation provides for the designation of a national contact point and the definition of remedies available to consumers in cases of non-compliance by the repairer.
AGCM oversees Artificial Intelligence
Pending the full entry into force of the AI Act (not before 2026), it falls to AGCM (the Italian Competition and Market Authority) to ensure that consumers are adequately protected in commercial practices involving artificial intelligence. A crucial role at a time when an increasing number of services are mediated by algorithms.
New Legality Rating
The new AGCM Regulation on the legality rating (resolution No. 31812 of 27 January 2026) introduces important changes: the validity period is extended to three years, and an additional score is awarded to companies that have obtained it continuously for at least three consecutive times.
Greenwashing: AGCM's crackdown
AGCM has challenged ultra-fast-fashion giants over allegedly misleading practices, compounded by generic, vague and misleading environmental claims. The transposition of the European greenwashing directive, due by 27 March 2026, will further strengthen enforcement tools.
More transparent utility bills
A new regulatory measure establishes that the electricity bill must become a precise monitoring tool for the consumer, rather than a document that is difficult to understand. The new rules on excise-duty transparency also apply to contracts already in force as of 31 December 2025.
